Good Question: Do you still need to sanitize groceries and mail?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Here’s a Good Question about wiping down mail and groceries.

A viewer asked, “Now that more is known about COVID, have the guidelines for sanitizing groceries changed? Also, do we need to leave packages and mail outside for 24 hours?"

The CDC updated its guidelines last month. Officials now say that the risk of infection from food products, packaging or bags is thought to be low.

Experts even say not to use disinfectants designed for hard surfaces, like bleach or ammonia, on food packaged in cardboard or plastic wrap.

As for the mail, you don’t need to leave it outside. The CDC recommends washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds after collecting your mail. You can also use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

That same advice goes for after unpacking your groceries.
