ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Let's talk about the DMV.

Road tests in New York remain suspended, but there's a petition going around calling for the NY DMV to temporarily waive the 20-question written test for learners permits, or at least make it available online.

People asking for this say it's holding teens back who can't get a head start on getting ready to drive before the real road tests.

When it comes to driving permits, the agency's website states:

"For the health and safety of the public in the wake of this global emergency, certain DMV services are temporarily unavailable. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding."

There are also questions about renewals. A viewer named Chris asked: “My driver’s license expires soon. I need an eye test to renew and my eye doctor is closed. How can I renew?”

The DMV also addresses that issue on the state website:

"An eye exam is required for an online license renewal. For motorists who do not want to get an eye test, the State has extended the validity of driver licenses that expired on or after March 1, 2020."
