ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Testing yourself for COVID-19 from the comfort of your own home? Costco is trying to make that a reality for its members by offering at-home coronavirus kits.
Costco is now giving shoppers the opportunity to take their new saliva test at home. As of now, they can only be bought online and promise results in 24 to 72 hours, but can you trust it?
“The saliva testing is as a test itself probably just about as good as the original nasal swab and the big difference is it can be obtained without a second person there so you don’t have to expose anybody,” Rochester Regional Health Infectious disease expert Dr. Anja Bottler said.
Dr. Bottler said overall this is an additional way of testing with reliable results.
“The results should be really good and really reliable and I looked at the video that Costco provided it’s fairly easy with the steps to do this and should be a very easy to do test,” Dr. Bottler said.
According to Costco, the results will be provided online through an app made by the telemedicine company AZOVA which will be billed as HIPPA-secure. However, Dr. Bottler said she does have some concerns.
“There are some very anxious patients and are they going to have counseling after this test result?” Dr. Bottler said. “Are they going to be told what symptoms to look out for? Do they already have symptoms? I think that's a concern for me that patients are a little bit left hanging after the result.”
With each home kit priced around $130 to $140, Dr. Bottler said it may still be better to visit a healthcare provider until the price gets brought down.
Since the reporting of these results is up to the individual, Dr. Bottler encourages anyone who tests positive to alert their doctor or the health department.
