(NBCNC) — Johnson & Johnson's vaccine candidate has offered protection against coronavirus in monkeys.

The pharmaceutical giant released pre-clinical data Thursday morning, stating that a single dose elicited a strong immune response in the six primates.

The company says it prevented infection and provided complete, or near-complete protection in the lungs from the virus.

The company also says they have started phase one trials in humans in the United States and Belgium.

Phase Three trials are expected to begin in September.
