ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — On top of the mask requirement in Monroe County buildings, the county is taking another step to try and help curb COVID-19.

With more holidays on the horizon, Monroe County Executive Adam Bello announced the county is securing 750,000 rapid testing kits for county residents, which will be completely free of charge.

It's similar to the free masks distribution last year during the height of the pandemic, but this time it's at-home tests for all.

Bello said the tests have been hard to come by, but the county is adamant about doing so for residents, especially as people continue to gather for the holidays.

“They come as two packs in these boxes. We don't have them all in yet, so they're coming in waves as you can imagine through the distribution network they're not easy to come by. But we ordered enough in order to have everybody in Monroe County who wants a rapid test, can have a rapid test. They don't have to pay for the test like you do right now out at pharmacies,” Bello said.

The county expects the testing kits will be available in the next couple of weeks. It is currently working with partners and resources across the county to help with a distribution plan. For a list of all the rapid testing sites, click here.
