New state law pays partial unemployment benefits

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A new law signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul aims to help businesses and employees struggling during the pandemic.

The New York State Department of Labor will start taking more steps to let businesses know about the shared work programs available.

The program allows employers to cut hours instead of laying off workers.

Then the state gives partial unemployment insurance benefits to those employees to help make up the money they would have lost.
