ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Residents, staff and doctors at the Jewish Home were among the first nursing homes in Monroe County to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and now they are getting their second shots this week.

“We vaccinated over 90% of our residents with their first and second dose,” Jewish Home administrator and registered nurse Michele Schirano said.

Schirano said they are on the path forward as many staff and residents get their second COVID-19 vaccine.

“Our residents seem to be fine for the second dose, we did have a few a handful of employees that reported some low-grade temps, headaches and some body aches,” Schirano said.

Schirano said vaccinations were supplied by CVS, and aside from a few technical glitches the first time around, it's been a smooth process with 60% of staff getting theirs.

“Around the employees, it's almost like a sense of relief like a weight off their shoulders that this has happened just because of all of the ugliness of COVID that's going on in the world and now at this point,” Schirano said. “Somebody, you know somebody that had COVID and then it's moving into somebody that they know died of COVID.”

She said after everyone is vaccinated, the goal moves to changing visitation restrictions for residents who haven't seen loved ones in months because of the pandemic.

“A lot of comments from the families, they are asking so what's going to happen with visitation? What do we know? How is this going to change?” Schirano said. “We feel very, very positive that this is the right thing to do and we will hear very soon from the governor’s office on what we can do as far as visitation opening because of the vaccine."

Schirano said they have one more clinic visit in three weeks and hopes by then New York State will give them their own vaccine so they will have a supply when there is resident or employee turnover.
