ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Rochester City School District will be pushing back its fall sports season.

Under current New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) guidelines, certain fall sports can begin Sept. 21, except for football, volleyball and competitive cheer, which the NYSPHSAA has postponed until March 1.

In the RCSD, all fall sports are being postponed until March 1.

In an email, the district said, "Given the fact that the District is in a fully remote learning environment, we believe the decision to postpone fall sports is the most responsible one. As we continue to face a worldwide pandemic that has had great impact in our community, it would not be in the best interest of our students to participate, practice, and compete."

The email also said, "We understand that this is disappointing news for our student athletes, their families, and coaches. While it was a difficult decision to make, just like our decision to begin the school year under the remote learning model, we are certain this is the right course of action at this time."

City soccer teams will likely only be able to play each other in the spring because other soccer teams will play this fall.

World of inquiry has been one of the better teams in section 5. Rich Paufler, their coach, told News10NBC this news is hard on his team.

"My team would love the opportunity to compete for a sectional title, that's not going to happen at this point, so they're going to be disappointed," Paufler said. "But, ultimately if we do get some games in it's going to be better than nothing."

The RCSD's football, volleyball and competitive cheer will still be able to compete against other schools if those sports do begin on March 1.

News10NBC's Rich Donnelly also spoke with Dr. Carlos Cotto Jr., Executive Director of Health Education, Physical Education and Athletics for RCSD.
