(WHEC) — The individual saliva swab COVID-19 test developed by SUNY Upstate Medical University and Quadrant Biosciences was granted emergency use authorization by the Food and Drug Administration.

The test has been used on SUNY campuses for widespread student testing.

The emergency use authorization means more labs can use the tests in New York and nationwide.

The test was first approved by the New York State Department of Health in August for the SUNY system’s use.

The University of Rochester Medical Center was one of 19 facilities that studied the saliva test. In a study with more than 150 participants, it found that it correctly diagnosed COVID-19 97.1% of the time.
