ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The University of Rochester used a crowd monitoring app called Occuspace to keep its campus open safely this semester.

It's one of many schools across the U.S. using the app.

Occuspace works by plugging sensors into wall outlets that scan for WiFi and Bluetooth activity from laptops, cell phones and other connected devices.

The data shows the crowd levels of spaces like gyms, dining halls and classrooms at any given time, which can then be accessed through a mobile app.

Occuspace says it does not collect personally identifiable information.
