URMC helping to test COVID variant-specific boosters

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Researchers in Rochester are trying to figure out if they can protect people from coronavirus better with new vaccines specifically tailored for new variants of the virus.

They know the vaccines do work against COVID-19, but they're concerned the shots' effectiveness fades over time and they might be less effective against new variants.

This is a Phase 2 clinical trial, part of a study by the National Institutes of Health.

The plan is to give some of the participants an ordinary Moderna booster and to give others vaccines specifically aimed at the beta, delta or omicron variants.

Researchers have been recruiting for about a week and they're hoping to work with volunteers over the age of 65 who may be especially vulnerable.
