ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The University of Rochester Medical Center is one of several facilities across the country that paused its late-stage AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine candidate trial Tuesday.
AstraZeneca made the decision voluntarily after one of the volunteers in the United Kingdom came down with an unexplained illness.
The URMC says there were 16 volunteers in Rochester, and as of Wednesday, none of them have experienced any unexpected or severe reactions. They have been contacted about the incident.
The URMC says it will continue to monitor their health daily.
Independent safety review committees in the U.K. and the U.S. are investigating the incident. No new volunteers will be enrolled in the study while it’s underway.
