ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A study is taking place in Rochester about the effects COVID-19 has on a mother's breast milk.
The University of Rochester Medical Center is teaming up with New York University and the University of Idaho.
The study is looking to create guidelines for mothers on breastfeeding, based on whether a mother can transmit COVID-19 through breast milk.
And are there antibodies in breast milk to fight against the disease?
They've just started enrolling moms in New York, and just got approval to start enrolling mom's nationally in the study.
“Realistically once we start recruiting nationally and we have a collaborator in New York City, which is unfortunately still a hotspot,” U of R Research Assistant Professor Bridget Young said. “So we're hoping to have 50 mom's enrolled in the next two months. this is everyone's top priority, COVID is everyone's top priority.”
Young says they hope to have the study completed by the end of the year.
