Why can't I sign up for Saturday's pop-up COVID vaccine clinics?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — On Wednesday Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that the Rochester area will have two pop-up COVID-19 vaccine clinics on Saturday, Feb. 6: One at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center, and one at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Geneva.

Monroe County is overseeing the Convention Center site (where 450 doses will be administered), and Ontario and Seneca Counties are overseeing the Geneva site.

There's been some confusion about the Governor's announcement. People have written to News10NBC asking "how do I schedule an appointment?" at one of these pop-up sites this weekend.

In their weekly coronavirus press briefing, Monroe County Executive Adam Bello and Public Health Commissioner Dr. Michael Mendoza addressed the confusion.

"The challenge with these links, as you know, is that they're not perfect ways to reach out to those who are traditionally harder to reach," Dr. Mendoza said.

Saturday's pop-up clinics are specifically meant for people in vulnerable and hard-to-reach communities who might not have access to a computer or the internet.

"We intentionally did not use the link system to reach out to these people," Mendoza said. "We are going door to door."

The County is working in partnership with several community and faith-based organizations like Common Ground Health and the Rapid Response Team to target underserved neighborhoods. Monroe County will be working with these groups to provide transportation to Saturday's pop-up clinic at the Convention Center.

The reason why the Convention Center was selected as a pop-up clinic location is because of its central location and proximity to the downtown transit center, according to county officials.

Dr. Mendoza said that the next clinic will likely be in a more rural area, though the timing of the next clinic will all depend on vaccine supply.
