Hochul: More data needed, but intention is to change definition of ‘fully vaccinated’ to include boosters

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — New York Gov. Kathy Hochul Thursday gave us a clearer look at possibly changing the state’s definition of "fully vaccinated" to include booster shots.

Right now you’re considered fully vaccinated if you have your first and second shot. The governor said she believes that will change.

“At some point, we have to determine that fully vaccinated means boosted as well,” Hochul said. “And we’ll give people a sufficient timeframe to make that happen.”

The governor first brought up the possibility of changing the definition on Tuesday.

According to Hochul, this change will not be made until more data is gathered and the legislation is more thought out, but she says the change may be presented shortly.

WINTER SURGE

Additionally Thursday, Hochul reiterated a winter surge of COVID cases was on the way. Currently, the state has a temporary indoor mask policy for every public space, though the mandate has been challenged by some county leaders.

The governor was asked whether there are metrics in place that will help her determine when the mask-or-vaccine policy will be lifted.

“I’m just curious, has anyone heard what I’ve said today about the situation we’re in? This is a crisis, this is a health care crisis and people are going to die it is not hyperbole it is based on the facts that are in front of us right now,” she said.
