ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The campaign to allow you to once again cross the United States- Canadian border is gaining support as Republican Congressman Chris Jacobs is calling for transparency in Canada's plans to reopen the border.

During an event in Niagara County Sunday, Jacobs said families who have been split due to the closure deserve a plan. The border has been closed for 15 months, with the restrictions being extended monthly. The current travel restrictions are set to expire on June 22.

Jacobs says the U.S.should take action if Canada decides to extend it again, including "unilaterally" opening the border on the U.S. side.

Last week, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced they are on the right path to reopening, but would make a decision based on the interest of Canadians.

Previously, Trudeau said he would consider opening the border when 75% of the country is vaccinated. Currently, only 5.7% percent of Canadians are fully vaccinated.
