ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — New York State Attorney General Letitia James says Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his staff are not doing anything illegal by stonewalling the release of the information into New York nursing homes deaths.

This story was first reported by the New York Post.

State health officials have said about 6500 people died from the coronavirus in nursing homes, though many believe that number is more likely in the 10,000 range.

People who got COVID-19 in a nursing home but died after they went to the hospital have not been counted as a nursing home death.

Both Cuomo and state health commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker have both said they want to make sure the numbers are right before releasing them.

News10NBC emailed the AG’s office for further comment but have yet to hear back.
