LAKEVILLE, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Livingston County Department of Health (LCDH) Friday warned that harmful blue green algae blooms have been found throughout Conesus Lake.

The LCDH just Wednesday warned that blooms were found on the north shore of Conesus Lake, near Vitale Park and the surrounding areas.

The LCDH reiterated Friday that the public water supply is safe for drinking.

Blue green algae usually bloom in warm, still water, and can create toxins in high concentrations.

The LCDH is advising people not to drink the lake water or use it for cooking, and not to swim, wade or come into direct contact with any water that is discolored or has scum on its surface.

If someone does come into contact with the affected water, the LCDH says wash it off with soap and water. It also suggests not letting surface water come into contact with open cuts or wounds.
