AVON, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Avon School District announced two classrooms in their Elementary School are impacted after a staff member tested positive for COVID-19.

Parents in the district were alerted by email. While many of them were unaware of the news, others tell News10NBC they feel this case of COVID-19 is being handled properly by the district.

For the next two weeks, some of their students will be learning remotely. Although the district wasted no time sending out an alert, many in the community are not overly concerned as they watched the boy's High School soccer team play.

"You don't think that a little town like Avon could get any cases and it could possibly spread, but just shows that it can definitely happen," high school senior Natalie Masten said.

The Livingston County Department of Health determined through contact tracing that the classroom needed to be closed. Avon resident John Frazer has children at the Middle School. He says the news is not surprising.

"I figured that it will eventually happen. I think they're taking good enough precautions where I don't think it will cause too many issues," Frazer said.

With his children just a few years removed from the elementary school, we asked Frazer how would he feel if COVID-19 was found at the middle school?

"I think it will eventually, but I think there's enough precaution being taken where I don't think it will cause too much harm to the kids," Frazer said.

So far none of the children have reported any symptoms. For now, it's just another two weeks for them at home.

"I think they're well prepared to be remote. It's unfortunate that they had to, ended up having to do that, but whatever we can do to keep everyone safe," Masten said.

A middle school staff member according to the same email was also sent home recently after coming into contact with a COVID positive family member. That staff member is currently being tested.
