CASTILE, N.Y. (WHEC) — The New York State Park Police rescued a black lab on Sunday who had fallen into a gorge at Letchworth State Park.

The Park Police say in a post to their Facebook page that they responded around 5 p.m. to help rescue the dog, a three-year-old named Achilles, after he fell between 150 to 200 feet before being stranded.

A rope rescue team led by Sgt. Phil Nesbitt and Officer James Marzec went over the gorge wall and rescued Achilles. The dog was then returned to his owner and was taken to an emergency vet.

The Park Police say that while Achiles suffered a broken rear leg and some minor injuries, he is otherwise healthy.
