ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The United States Coast Guard is reminding the public to use "extreme caution" on the ice along Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, and the Finger Lakes.

The Coast Guard says there have been multiple accidents in the past few weeks that have resulted in people falling through the ice into frigid water losing personal recreational equipment, like snowmobiles and ATVs.

Ice thickness this year is below past seasonal averages, which has resulted in unstable ice formation.

The Coast Guard is advising the public to not venture onto the ice and to never assume the ice is safe, even if others are on it.

If you do engage in recreational activities on or near the cold water, officials are reminding the public to take proper safety precautions.

Some safety precautions include:

  • Wear proper clothing to prevent hypothermia and choose bright colors to be easily seen by others
  • Carry safety equipment such as a whistle or noise-making device, waterproof VHF-FN radio, or Personal Locating Beacon
  • Bring along ice awls, picks, or screwdrivers which can be used for self-rescue if needed
