University Police: Gun found in unattended bag at SUNY Geneseo, ‘does not appear to be any further risk’

GENESEO, N.Y. (WHEC) — University Police at SUNY Geneseo are investigating after a loaded gun was found in a bag on campus Tuesday.

University Police say the bag with the gun was found sitting on a bench near Livingston Hall at around 7 a.m. They say an employee in the facilities department found it.

New York State law prohibits anyone but law enforcement from having a gun on college property.

University Police began an investigation as a result, trying to locate the person who left the gun there, and determine if there was a threat to the campus.

Chief Christopher Prusak said the investigation found there was no urgent threat to the community, and since canceling classes or putting the campus under lockdown has “a significant impact on the college community”, UPD determined doing so was not warranted.

The chief said additional patrols around the campus will continue, and classes and activities will continue as planned.

He reiterated that there does not appear to be any further risk to the campus.
