GREECE, N.Y. — The woman who died along with her dog in an early-morning fire Sunday has been identified as 75-year-old Barbara Guilday.

The fire broke out around 8:17 Sunday morning at a house on Crosby Lane.

First responders lined the street, including Greece Police, North Greece Fire District, and Monroe Ambulance. They were met with heavy fire and smoke, and found the woman and her dog on the second floor.

Neighbors said that they woke up to the sound of sirens.

Keith Osier lives across the street and said he was sleeping when he heard several fire trucks make their way toward the house. He said he didn’t see flames, but could smell the smoke.

“I was in bed and my dogs were going crazy. I heard a million sirens. She was on oxygen and had a hard time getting around so I don’t know if that played into it or not, or if she couldn’t get out. I didn’t see flames just smoke out the roof. But ya know, it’s just an unfortunate situation.”

Kevin Battaglia, Chief of North Greece Fire Department said, “We received Ridge Road and Lakeshore on the initial call, so we had 25 firefighters on scene within seven minutes.

This is a tragedy that Osier hopes people will remember and do everything possible to safeguard their homes and families.

“Obviously I mean we have fire extinguishers. I mean fire detectors. I don’t know if she had those or not. I’m assuming she probably did. I just know she had a hard time getting around, I’m told so maybe that had something to do with it.

Officials say the fire was under control within 10 minutes, but the cause is under investigation.
