ROCHESTER, N.Y. Monroe County continues to figure out ways to fight the opioid crisis.
Thursday, county leaders announced two brand new initiatives. One is an online map that gives locations of Narcan boxes in the county, and the second is a new IMPACT team.
Right now, there are 50 boxes the impact team has placed around the county. Each box will have 12 doses of Narcan and instructions on how to give it to someone who needs it. The Narcan boxes are being compared to fire extinguishers you’d see at local businesses.
This new $50,000 program is funded through a grant from the National Institutes of Health and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The program is targeting communities experiencing high levels of overdose and overdose deaths.
“We’ve also added a 24/7 opioid crisis hotline,” County Executive Adam Bello said. “The hotline is 585-753-5300, and that hotline links individuals and families to treatment prevention and resources available to them in the community.”
Bello says there are 500 more boxes on the way.
