(WHEC) — President Donald Trump drew criticism on Friday for holding a firework display for the Fourth of July at Mount Rushmore.
During his speech, the president focused his remarks on demonstrations across the country calling for the removal of monuments and confederate statues.
He calls the efforts a merciless campaign to desecrate American history and emphasized a new law to punish protesters who tamper those properties or try to bring them down.
"That is why I am deploying Federal law enforcement to protect our monuments, arrest the rioters and prosecute offenders to the fullest extent of the law," said President Trump.
The event drew a crowd of thousands of people. However, most did not wear a mask or follow social distancing guidelines which weren't required at the event.
Health experts criticized the president for holding such a large gathering while COVID-19 cases have spiked across the country.
