(NBC News) — Four people are dead after supporters of President Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol Wednesday.

A woman was shot as she worked with others to break through a door inside the Capitol building, and Washington, D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee says three other people died of "medical emergencies."

Their assault on the Capitol came after President Trump gave a speech in front of the White House, during which he repeated false allegations of a rigged presidential election, called on his supporters to march to the Capitol, and suggested he might join them.

The breach forced members of Congress to pause their count of electoral college votes and evacuate.

The chaos came shortly after a group of Trump loyalists in Congress slowed the process by objecting to President-elect Biden's win in a series of battleground states.

Those same Republicans are pushing baseless claims of election fraud, even after being soundly defeated in a series of recounts and lawsuits.
