PEMBROKE, N.Y. (WHEC) -- A man died Thursday after deputies say he drove head-on into a tractor-trailer.
According to Genesee County Sheriff's deputies, the car was traveling west on Route 5 in Pembroke when it crossed over into oncoming traffic around 3 p.m. and struck a tractor-trailer head-on.
The driver of the car died instantly.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to UMMC in Batavia with minor injuries.
"We're looking into all avenues, but like I said until we get the report back from the ME's office and crash gets its report back, it's still kind of unknown at this time," said Sgt. Andrew Hale, Genesee County Sheriff's Office.
"I've been doing this now probably since '82 and this is probably the worst accident injury wise that I've seen, worse than the Thruway, " said Ed Mileham, Pembroke assistant fire chief. The assistant fire chief says this was a 55 mph zone.
The DEC spill team is taking care of fuel that spilled into the ditch after the crash while the Genesee County Sheriff's Office is still working to determine the cause of the crash.
Route 5 from Back Street to the Erie County line was closed for some time for further investigation but has since reopened.
