May 17, 2018 08:15 PM

Each year, we ask our viewers to nominate people from our community for their volunteerism. The ESL Jefferson Awards are part of the national Jefferson Award Foundation which strives to build a culture of service in communities across the country. Founded in 1972 by well-known public servants including former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the Jefferson Awards are the country’s longest standing and most prestigious honor of its kind.

Barber Devon Reynolds has the traditional tools of the trade. He has good clippers for the hairline, a straight razor for the face, and an attention to precision that keeps customers coming back. But that's not all he brings to the job.

Deanna Dewberry: "Why do you have such a community mindset."

Devon Reynolds, owner Brothers and Sisters Unisex Salon:  "My mother was big on giving back and she was a community leader."

It's as if this 26-year-old was born to serve others. He's turned his barber shop on Dewey Avenue in Rochester. Brothers and Sisters Unisex Salon, into a community center of sorts.  He feeds the needy through food drives and provides neighborhood children with back packs, school supplies, and free back to school haircuts.

Dewberry: "About how many kids did you have come through here this school year?"

Reynolds: "This year we had 270. It was beautiful."

At his healthy 'barber-que' he feeds the whole community and provides free health screenings..

And while the barbershop has always been the place to talk Reynolds takes it to a new level, creating a space for community forums.

They cover everything from financial literacy to mental health.

The walls reflect that as they are covered with pictures from his community events.

Reynolds: "We had a sneaker competition where they had to do math problems.

Dewberry: "They got Jordans!"

Reynolds: "Yep!"

Devon Reynolds cuts hair, hunger, and complacency. He is creating change in our community.
