ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Memorial Day weekend is often seen as the unofficial start of summer, and a time for friends, family, and barbecues. Still, it’s important to remember the true purpose of the holiday, which is to honor the men and women who paid the ultimate price in defense of this country.

If you're looking for something to do over Memorial Day weekend in the Rochester area, there's no shortage of choices.

MONDAY, MAY 27

Brighton

  • Hikyoga will be holding a Memorial Day Hikyoga at Corbett's Glen with Christina from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. For more information and to buy tickets to the event click here.
  • The Town of Brighton will hold a Memorial Day Ceremony at 2 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial at Buckland Park, 1341 Westfall Rd. Parking will be available at Buckland Park, while handicapped parking will be available at the Buckland Farmhouse. 

Bushnell's Basin

Charlotte

  • The historic Dentzel Carousel at Ontario Beach Park in Charlotte will be open for free rides. The carousel will be open from noon to 7 p.m.

Chili

  • The Chili American Legion will be hosting a Memorial Day Parade at 8 a.m. The parade will start at Grenell Drive and conclude at the Senior Center and Town Court. Immediately following the parade will be a ceremony on the Senior Court front lawn.

Fairport

  • Eagle Vale Golf Club is offering a free round of golf and a cart for anyone after 11 a.m. with a military ID. 
  • Fairport Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) will be hosting a parade at 10 a.m. beginning at the Fairport Baptist Home. The VFW invites all current military and veterans to join the march. The group will be assembling in front of the Fairport Baptist Home at 9 a.m.

Greece

  • The town of Greece will be holding their Memorial Day Parade beginning at noon. The parade will proceed down Long Pond Road from Janes Road to the Greece Town Hall. A Remembrance Ceremony will be held at the Greece Town Hall Pavillion.  Those who want to participate in the parade can call 225-2000 and ask for the Office of the Supervisor. 

Honeoye Falls

  • The Honeoye Falls parade will begin at the Honeoye Falls-Lima High School and proceed through the village of Honeoye Falls to the cemetery. A service will be held at the cemetery. The Star Spangled Banner will be played by the Honeoye Falls-Lima High School Band. Colonel Mike Sweeney is the speaker for the event.

Irondequoit

  • Irondequoit will host a brief flag-raising ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at Irondequoit Town Hall at 7 a.m., and then later a memorial service at the Irondequoit Cemetery at 3671 Culver Rd. at 9 a.m.

Lima

  • The Lima Memorial Day Parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Lima Primary School.  The parade will proceed to Lima Town Hall where a service will be held in front of the town hall. All veterans are invited to march with the Lima American Legion Post #282 or Lima VFW Post #26.

Medina

  • Medina will host a WWI Memorial Dedication and Memorial Day Observances at noon at State Street Park in Medina. 

Mendon

  • The Mendon Parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. from the Westminster Hall & Chapel and march to the Mendon Cemetery. A service will follow featuring the Star Spangled Banner performed by the Honeoye Falls-Lima Middle School Band.

Pittsford

  • The Pittsford Memorial Day Parade will begin at the corner of Sutherland and West Jefferson Streets at 10 a.m. The parade will conclude with a ceremony at the Pittsford Cemetery. Following the ceremony will be a reception at Rayson-Miller American Legion Post #899 on North Main Street.

Scottsville

  • The Scottsville Memorial Day Parade will step off at 9:30 a.m. from TJ Connor Elementary School. The route will proceed to Smith-Warren American Legion Post #367 where there will be a ceremony following the parade.

Rochester

  • The Memorial Day Parade in downtown Rochester will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of East and Alexander and then proceed down East Avenue to Main Street, and then west on Main Street to South Plymouth Avenue, before turning south on South Plymouth Avenue to Broad Street between Exchange and Plymouth. 
  • Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 20 will hold their Memorial Day Ceremony at 1 p.m. at the Greater Rochester Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Highland Park.
  • In honor of Memorial Day, the Rochester Red Wings be offering all tickets for just $5 on Monday, with all hot dogs just 50 cents. Game time is 1:05 p.m.
  • The Red Wings and the Rochester Corvette Club will be holding a special Memorial Day ceremony before the game at noon. The Patriot Guard Riders will lead a 16-car Corvette parade escorting veterans and current military members onto the field for a ceremony.
  • The Murph Challenge will be holding two classes at Ridgeway Athletics in Rochester. The Murph Challenge is a CrossFit challenge in honor of Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy. To learn more about The Murph Challenge's mission and to register you can visit their website.
  • Oak Hill Country Club East will be hosting the 2019 National Car Rental PGA Reach Pro-Am. Tee off will be around 10 a.m.

Rush

  • The 73rd annual Rush Memorial Day Parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Rush Firemen's Field. There will be a service at the Rush Pine Hill Cemetery after the parade.

Victor

  • The Town of Victor will be hosting a Memorial Day breakfast from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Victor Fire Hall. The town's parade will begin at 10 a.m. at the school and proceed through the town of Victor.
  • Victor's annual Memorial Day Children's Carnival will begin immediately following the parade at the Victor Methodist Church.
  • The New York Beer Project will be holding its first Clammin' and Jammin' Monday of the summer from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Webster

  • Webster's Memorial Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Spry Middle School. The parade will conclude at the Webster Rural Cemetery where a service will be held. All active duty and ex-service men and women are invited to take part in the parade.
