BATAVIA, N.Y. (WHEC)- Activists are calling for Batavia to be a "sanctuary city" from abortion.
The activists, who demonstrated at the local Planned Parenthood office in Batavia on Saturday morning, say they are upset over New York's new "Reproductive Health Act", which makes it clear that even late-term abortions are legal.
Earlier this week, the city council debated whether to formally declare opposition to the RHA, but some advocates want the council to go further and declare Batavia a "sanctuary city" where no abortions can be performed.
Demonstrators say they're working on a possible city law and a citywide referendum on the idea. They also urged women considering abortions to consider alternatives.
"We are here to say that you're not alone," says Mona Dayon of the "All Babies Cherished" group, "That there is another option other than going to Planned Parenthood, you can come us at All Babies Cherished."
"I just said I have to do something," said Ann Marie Scalia, "I know there are many people out there. It doesn't matter if you're Republican or Democrat. That has nothing to do with this. It has everything to do with respecting the life of a baby."
A statement from Planned Parenthood accused the activits of spreading "misinformation."
The statement said that "The Reproductive Health Act clarifies that trained health care providers acting within their scope of practice can provide abortion care. This ensures that more New Yorkers have access to early and safe abortion care."
