If you've been to the Rochester airport lately, you've noticed a lot of work going on.

A $79-million renovation is underway.

News10NBC Investigative Reporter Jennifer Lewke got an exclusive tour of the project Tuesday, and a look at the tight timetable for its completion.

Pretty much everywhere you look, both inside and out, at the Rochester International Airport, you'll see construction equipment, building supplies and contractors.

On any given day, more than 150 tradesman are working on the numerous multi-million dollar projects that make up the complete renovation.

From a new TSA checkpoint, to renovated terminals and new restaurants to a state-of-the-art canopy outside with facial recognition, the work started less than a year ago and will be complete in the coming months.

News10NBC Investigative Reporter Jennifer Lewke: "There are a number of individual projects all happening at the same time. Is that how you wanted it to work so it was all done quickly?"

Cheryl Dinolfo, Monroe County executive: "We had an aggressive time frame."

Lewke: "Were there any deadlines tied to the money?"

Dinolfo: "Certainly. When we applied for funding from the state, we did receive a $39-million grant from the state of New York. Part of that process was to meet the state's timeline. The state's timeline says this project should be wrapped up by the end of October, so we knew that going in."

Governor Cuomo has made a few stops in Rochester to talk about the money he awarded to the airport for this project.

Chances are, he'll be back for the ribbon cutting too which, looks to be right before the November election.

Politics aside, the project is proving to be transformative for the airport.

Lewke: "Is it on budget? Are we looking like everything is according to plan?"

Dinolfo: "So, the total cost of the project was approximately $79-million and it looks like right now, we will keep that within budget."
