Vigil to be held for Albion grad, mother found murdered

A recent Albion high school grad and her mother were found murdered inside their own home.

Former Albion residents, 19-year-old Rosa Lee Maldonado and her mother, 44-year-old Rosa Aminta Maldonado, were found dead inside a home in Limestone County in Alabama early Wednesday morning.

Deputies say the suspect, Rosa Lee's 15-year-old sister, used several knives to murder her family members. Then, investigators say the suspect stabbed herself in the neck and head with a butcher knife. She was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

"It was someone begging and pleading for help," Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely said about the chilling 911 call from the victims. "You could hear the mother actually taking her last breaths and dying there on the phone. What caused this, we don't know. This is a very horrific act."

Rosa Lee graduated from Albion in 2017. Her family recently moved to Alabama.

Deputies are working with the local district attorney's office about charges for the 15-year-old suspect. She is a juvenile, but the sheriff sees this as a capital murder case.

A vigil will be held to remember the victims Friday at 8 p.m. at Bullard Park in Albion.

This is not the first time the family has faced tragedy.

In 2011, Rosa Aminta Maldonado's daughter and Rosa Lee's older sister was raped and killed by her brother-in-law. Carlos Cardenas is serving 25 years to life in prison for the murder of 15-year-old Katherine Sanchez.
