ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— This year, because gatherings will be much smaller, some people are opting to have Thanksgiving dinner catered instead of cooking a big meal. The surge of holiday orders has been a welcomed relief for local catering companies that have lost business due to the pandemic.

"Years past we've never had this many orders for holidays," said Jillian Zazzaro, a manager at Chef's Catering on Chili Ave in Rochester. "Thanksgiving take out has been, definitely been more popular this year with families that can't get together and can't do any gatherings."

Governor Cuomo is encouraging people to keep Thanksgiving gatherings to 10 people or fewer this year. Because many families will have fewer mouths to feed, there's less of a need to prepare large, home-cooked meals. Chef's Catering has adjusted its offerings to meet customers' changing needs.

"With COVID happening we started doing packaged meals that we're selling individually to families or we're selling them at grocery stores, and now with Thanksgiving coming and holidays coming, more people are taking that option," said Zazzaro.

Chef's Catering customer Courtney Anderson is one of those people. Her Thanksgiving will have 4-6 people this year, vs. her normal crowd of 20-25 people. She opted to go with catering in order to spend more time with her family.

"I think this year there's a lot of outside stressors going on with the pandemic between social stuff, stuff at work, stuff with the kids at school, it's just one less thing to have to worry about and to be able to enjoy yourself with your family instead of having to be cooking all day long is much more enjoyable to me," said Anderson.

If you're looking to having Thanksgiving catered this year, it's better to place your order sooner rather than later. Sunday night is the cutoff for orders at Chef's Catering. Once you place your order, you can pick up your fully cooked meal on Wednesday along with re-heating instructions. Learn more about Chef's Catering by clicking here.
