New bill to protect New York shelter animals from abusers

April 26, 2018 12:26 AM

The New York State Senate on Wednesday passed a bill to protect animals at shelters from animal abusers.

The bill, sponsored by local Senator Patrick Gallivan, prevents anyone convicted of animal cruelty from being a dog or animal control officer, or working at a shelter, pound, humane society or SPCA.

Currently, there is nothing preventing animal abusers from working in these positions or being hired in the future.

The bill is now headed to the New York State Assembly.
