ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Rev. Myra Brown and Joan Coles Howard, members of the Spiritus Anti-Racism Coalition (SPARC), stopped by our studio to tell us about a big project they’ve got in the works.

SPARC is in the process of planning and developing a Civil Rights Heritage Site, a first for Rochester and New York State.

Described as an outdoor civil rights classroom, the site will honor historical figures like Malcolm X, Dr. Charles Lunsford, and Mildred Johnson.

SPARC is holding a fundraiser event to support the project called “A Past That Informs” on Saturday, Feb. 29.

The event will feature writer and speaker Susan L. Taylor, the award-winning Spiritus Christi gospel choir, and storytellers from the Civil Rights struggle in Rochester, among others.
