A former Churchville fire chief was killed Friday night just after 8 p.m. in a fatal snowmobile accident.

The Town of Inlet Police say that Thomas Hetherington, 46, of Middlesex was operating a 2004 Ski-Doo snowmobile near Browns Tract Road in Middlesex when he lost control and struck a tree.

Multiple efforts by other riders in his group were made to rescue and resuscitate Hetherington, who was currently an assistant fire chief at Middlesex Fire Department. He was pronounced dead shortly after.

Police say the cause of the accident appears to be unsafe speed and icy conditions.
