ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) – Monroe County Legislature President Joe Carbone appointed Rachel Barnhart to fill the vacancy in the 21st District seat in the Monroe County legislature on Thursday.
On Wednesday night, the Monroe County Democratic Committee voted to unanimously appoint Rachel Barnhart to the 21st District seat vacated by former legislator Mark Muoio.
Muoio resigned under pressure, after he moved to a home outside of the district.
Barnhart defeated Victor Sanchez in the Democratic Primary for the seat by a margin of 54%-46% in June. Sanchez will remain on the ballot on the Working Families Party line, but vowed not to campaign. Barnhart will also appear on the SAM, or Serve America Movement, party line. No Republican, and no candidate from any other party, will be on the ballot for the seat on November’s ballot.
Muoio ran for Rochester City Court Judge in June’s primary and lost.
Monroe County Democratic Committee Chairwoman Brittaney Wells submitted a recommendation to Carbone that was required to make Barnhart’s appointment official.
In a post on Twitter Wednesday night, Barnhart wrote in part, “I’m honored & humbled to have the support of the Democratic committee, which voted tonight, to fill out the remaining term.”
