Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter responded on Thursday night to a call from the New York State Sheriffs’ Association.
The group wants armed officers in all schools in New York. Their proposal asks the New York State Legislature to include enough funding in the 2018 budget to provide at least one armed school resource officer at every grade school and high school in the state.
This comes after last week's deadly mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida that left 17 dead.
“I think school resource officers are an important part in the security plan of our schools and I support the concept,” Baxter said in a statement. “In addition, I also champion the idea of hardening the target and doing a much better job in threat assessment.”
“By ‘hardening the target,’ Baxter clarified that he was referring to physical security. He wants set points that are controlled with security, with all other doors locked, verified and tested.
