ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Democratic candidate for Monroe County Executive is pushing for more funding for early voting in the area.
Adam Bello is calling on Monroe County to provide the funding and increase the number of polling locations available for early voting.
This fall's election is the first time that New York State will allow early voting, and there are seven planned locations in Monroe County. Bello says that allows for only one polling place for every 65,000 voters, which he says isn't enough.
"This is about voting," Bello said. "This is the bedrock of our democracy, this is how we choose our government leaders, and other counties have stepped up to the plate."
Bello noted that Erie County will provide 37 locations for early voting, while Westchester County will have 27 locations.
In a statement, a county spokesperson said that the Monroe County Board of Elections set its number of early polling locations by May 1, and since then there has been no inquiry about increasing the number of locations.
"Today's attack is simply a cynical ploy for some politicians to draw attention to themselves in the midst of campaign season," the spokesperson said.
