Bill to award Congressional medal to Capitol Police moves forward

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— The congressional gold medal is one step closer to being awarded to the United States Capitol Police and the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi held an enrollment ceremony to sign the legislation that honors the law enforcement agencies that protected the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

Pelosi expressed her gratitude to the officers for their courage and sacrifice to protect the Capitol against rioters.

"I know, I know how fortunate we are to have the bravery, the patriotism of our capitol police. they are so remarkable, I’m so sad that it took a tragedy of this nature for the recognition to be given to them," Pelosi said.

The legislation now heads to President Biden’s desk for his signature.
