Body found off Point Breeze identified as missing Rochester man

ALBION, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Ontario County Sheriff's Office says the body found off Point Breeze is that of a missing Rochester man who went missing in a state park in Niagara Falls.

A group of fishermen on a chartered boat discovered the body of Serhiy Smyk, 32, Sunday morning. Deputies say his body was found about three miles offshore.

Smyk went fishing with friends in the Niagara River Gorge in Whirlpool State Park on June 21. They stayed in the gorge overnight, according to deputies, and his friends reported him missing the next day. 

The park is on the Niagara River and overlooks the Niagara Whirlpool. The area is known for its rapids. 

The cause of death is pending the toxicology results. 

Deputies and state park police are continuing to investigate.
