ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A Brockport man died following a single-engine plane crash in Cattaraugus County Wednesday.
The Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office says deputies were dispatched to the Great Valley Airport in Great Valley around 2:10 p.m. Wednesday for the report of a plane crash.
Investigators say it appears a problem occurred during takeoff, causing the plane to crash in a field near the runway.
Authorities say 80-year-old William Mandelare of Brockport died in the crash, and 72-year-old Raymond Groetsch, also of Brockport, is in critical condition at Erie County Medical Center.
Witnesses to the plane crash involving two Brockport men say the plane was low at takeoff. They saw it tilt to one side, crash, and catch fire.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board tweeted that it will travel to the crash site.
An NTSB air safety investigator will arrive at the accident site in Great Valley, NY, today to begin the on-scene phase of the investigation.— NTSB_Newsroom (@NTSB_Newsroom) April 8, 2021
