BUFFALO, N.Y. (WGRZ) — A fugitive returning from China is being held at the Erie County holding center and is under medical observation for the novel coronavirus.

42-year-old Kevin Qiu, who is from Brooklyn, is wanted on an outstanding bench in Pennsylvania.

The Erie County Sheriff's Office says he tried to enter the U.S. on Wednesday through the Peace Bridge after returning from China.

According to our Buffalo affiliate, Qiu is not symptomatic but was assessed as a medium risk for the virus.

"It appears that they took every precaution here, they got the health department over there, and everything was done in a quick and proper format," Erie County District Attorney John Flynn said.

The Erie County Sheriff's Office said they are in communication with Pennsylvania law enforcement officials.

They say they will not take custody of Qiu.

He will be released when the proper health departments are notified.
