ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — If you're looking for a job, the US Census Bureau is looking to hire thousands of people for the upcoming 2020 Census.

These jobs are not only in demand, but they also offer better-than-average salaries.

In Rochester alone, there are about 4,000 open positions available right now. Most people will qualify, and the Bureau is relying on some homegrown candidates.

Hundreds of Rochester residents have already applied for these jobs.

News10NBC was not allowed to enter the East Main Street office set up for Census 2020, or interview anyone inside. Most newly hired employees will be based here.

City of Rochester Chief of Staff Alex Yudelson gave us an update on how things are going so far.

"We know that recruitment is going very well, but there are so many jobs that they have to fill, and we need more people," Yudelson said.

The two areas with the highest need happen to be office personnel and census field takers who will go door to door to help gather information. The Bureau desperately needs people who can work in the community they live in.

"It’s really critical that we have lots of city residents, people from our actual neighborhoods that are applying for these jobs," Yudelson said.

He went on to say, "So it's trustworthy faces that are reminding these people to fill out the census and explaining to them why it's so important."

Gov. Andrew Cuomo kicked off the State's Census 2020 Campaign. During his speech at the Capitol he said, "We have started an unprecedented effort to make this count right. The State has pledged $70 million to do this in funding."

His goal is that every New Yorker is counted before the end of the summer. The count according to Yudelson will help decide how much federal dollars are sent to the area.

"Our funding is based off that. Our congressional representation is based off that so it's very important that we receive an accurate count," Yudelson said.

If you're wondering what the job pays, Yudelson also has the answer.

"The job pays really well. I believe they pay around $17 an hour, and that's for the field position. So they have different types of jobs open."

These job openings are posted on the City of Rochester's website, Rochester Works and
