CHILI, N.Y. (WHEC) — Several people are out of their homes after an apartment fire early Sunday morning in Chili.
Firefighters responded to the Chili Gardens Apartments on Chili Avenue just before 1:30 a.m. for reports of flames.
Monroe County Sheriff's deputies and Gates Police evacuated the building and kept the people who lived in two buildings in an RTS bus.
Five fire companies responded to the blaze, which investigators believe started in a storage area.
Firefighters say there is fire damage to the first and second floors of the building, as well as smoke damage on the third floor.
"Right now, we're trying to figure out which apartments are occupied, which are vacant," Gates Chief Alan Bubel said. "We're working with the property management to determine those numbers, so then if we need to, we'll work with the Red Cross to get them relocated as necessary."
The Gates Fire Department says that 19 people have been displaced by the fire after earlier reports that people in 12 apartments could be without a home. The Red Cross is working to find temporary housing for some, while others are staying with family.
No one was hurt.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
