City formally responds to lawsuit over state takeover

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The City of Rochester has formally responded to the Rochester City school board following its decision to sue Mayor Lovely Warren over a controversial proposal.

The district says Warren's push for a state takeover of the Rochester City School District is illegal. School leaders want an immediate injunction to stop the city and the mayor from putting the referendum on the November ballot.

In new court filings, the city argues taking the vote away from taxpayers only puts concerns of board members and their paychecks above education issues and the best interest of kids.

The city is asking the courts to side with Warren and throw out the case.
