ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The city is pushing back against criticism of its "dynamic staffing" plan for firehouses in Rochester.

The plan began on Monday as Engine 1 was closed down from 6 p.m. until 8 a.m. the next morning. During those hours, other firehouses responded to calls typically assigned to Engine 1.

The firefighters union criticized the plan saying it failed to make public safety a priority.

The city responded with a series of tweets saying that dynamic staffing has been in place for decades during daytime hours. The city followed up saying that fire department calls were higher during the day than the night and that a study by the city found it would not impact public safety.
