GREECE, N.Y. (WHEC) -- Last December, a fire ravaged the Greece Commons apartment building leaving a coach with nothing and his basketball team without jerseys.

The uniforms were destroyed in the fire.

Coach Johnnie Mathis, who runs the Shining Stars Basketball Academy, says community member Anita Chazan got in contact with him and orchestrated a Facebook fundraiser.

The Penfield woman raised more than $1,000 for the team.

"They couldn't afford to buy new jerseys and it's a good thing to do to help the community," said Chazan. "We were happy to do it."

The money, with the help of more fundraising and Coach Mathis contributing from his own pocket, enabled the team to buy all new uniforms valued at more than $3,000.

"I just want to say thank you to all the community...you know, it's good to give," said Mathis.

"I'm kinda excited to play this weekend now," said player Evelyse Burgos about the new uniforms. "The same team, same good vibes and now we got our jerseys. We're ready to go."
