GATES, N.Y. (WHEC) — The local community gathered to pay their respects to fallen Gates firefighter Joe Manuse.
A funeral for Manuse was held Tuesday at St. Jude Church on Lyell Road in Gates.
Manuse served as the Gates-Chili Fire Department's fire prevention officer and its public information officer. He had been a volunteer for 29 years and worked in Gates for 11 years.
"Nobody could walk into the room the way you could, Joe," said Derek Hardy of the Gates Fire Department. "Nobody has that whistle, but we all share that pride. Put everyone in front of yourself and we took every bit of it from you. Because we love you and always wanted more still to this day."
Manuse died Sept. 1 after he was stung in the neck by a bee. He was 48 years old.
