ROCHESTER, N.Y. (HWEC) — Construction is underway on a 2.2-acre site that has been sitting vacant for nearly 50 years.

A historic blaze in 1971 burnt down an early 1900s structure originally built to house the Sherwood Shoe Factory. The lot at 625 South Goodman St. has since been vacant.

It will soon be home to a modern, solar-powered energy efficient, 100-unit complex.

Construction for the $20 million property includes undertaking a major excavation effort to remove 18,000 tons of contaminated soil left behind from the 1971 fire.

"What's not to like about the growth of the economy in Rochester? We have lost so many people in the city, and this is a chance to keep them in quality housing," Judy Hay from the Swillburg Neighborhood Association said.

The mid-rise building will house one- and two-bedroom apartments, which are available for leasing now

The grand opening is scheduled for March 2020.
